Navitas student receives Cultural Ambassador Award
UC International College (UCIC) alumna, Cherry Ann Weist, has been presented with the prestigious Cultural Ambassador Award at the Waitaha Canterbury International Student Awards 2023.
Taking place at the Nga Hau E Wha National Marae, and presented by Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger, the awards celebrate the profound impact international students have on the vibrant city of Ōtautahi Christchurch. They also recognise the diverse and exceptional contributions made by international students who, through their remarkable leadership, mentorship, cultural exchange, and community engagement, enrich our local community.
Cherry was acknowledged for actively promoting cultural exchange and understanding between diverse communities within Ōtautahi Christchurch.
“Cherry demonstrated her commitment to becoming a cultural ambassador even before setting foot in Aotearoa New Zealand,” said UCIC College Director and Principal, Julia Innocente-Jones.
“Ever since she started her student journey as an online foundation studies student at UCIC, Cherry has dedicated her time and efforts to not only bridge cultural gaps for her fellow students, but also supported and mentored students to transition smoothly from UCIC to the University of Canterbury (UC) and encouraged them to join in and actively integrate into the UC community.
“Now a Bachelor of Arts student at UC, Cherry continues to be passionate about students, their experience, wellbeing and mental health. She has commendable cultural intelligence that she continually uses to advocate for a better international student experience at the University of Canterbury.”
The Cultural Ambassador Award recognises a student’s efforts to celebrate cultural heritage, create opportunities for intercultural dialogue, and build bridges between various cultural groups. It also honours an international student who has been a strong advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion within their educational institution or the community. This award also recognises the student’s commitment to raising awareness of social issues and creating a more inclusive environment that embraces people of all backgrounds in Waitaha Canterbury.
